“Oh, O‘ahu…” 2002 University of Hawaii at Manoa Advanced Photography 4×5 B&W Project – In 2001, when my wife and I moved to O‘ahu, we were mailing boxes from the post office in California. The clerk was excited to hear that we were moving to Hawaii and asked where we were going. When we said O‘ahu, the clerk replied in a rather snarky tone, “Oh, O‘ahu…” as if to say O‘ahu wasn’t an amazing place to live. For some reason it stuck with me and I wanted to make pictures of the island that weren’t only palm trees and sandy beaches (although, there are a few). I went around the island with my 4×5 and started making images. I wanted to show that O‘ahu wasn’t an afterthought. It was and still is a magical place.
